Lens has undergone a spectacular cultural renaissance since the Louvre-Lens opened in 2012, a branch of the Louvre museum built on a former mine site. This luminous building by SANAA houses the Gallery of Time, 205 Louvre masterpieces displayed chronologically in a 3,000 m² space — and entry to this permanent gallery is free. The city is also at the heart of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Slag heaps, mining villages and headframes bear witness to 270 years of coal mining. The Bollaert-Delelis stadium, home of RC Lens, pulses with one of Ligue 1's finest atmospheres on match nights.

Route Lille → Lens
From Lille, take the A1 towards Paris. In 30 minutes, exit 16 'Lens Centre' puts you 5 minutes from the Louvre-Lens. The motorway crosses the Flanders plain then enters the mining basin with its characteristic slag heaps visible on both sides. The Louvre-Lens is on Rue Paul-Bert, with a large free car park. For Bollaert stadium, follow 'Stade' signs from the town centre.

Specific tips for the Lille → Lens route
The Louvre-Lens is closed on Tuesdays. The Gallery of Time (permanent collection) is free — only temporary exhibitions are paid (€10). The 20-hectare landscaped park around the museum is perfect for a stroll. The Mining History Centre at Lewarde (20 km) is France's largest mining museum — the driver can take you there. On match days at Bollaert, book your taxi well in advance: traffic is very heavy around the stadium.
