Boulogne-sur-Mer is France's leading fishing port and the unofficial capital of the Côte d'Opale (Opal Coast). The city is best known for Nausicaá, Europe's largest aquarium, welcoming 1.6 million visitors a year with its 10,000 m³ open-ocean tank. The upper town, enclosed by 13th-century ramparts, forms one of the best-preserved fortified ensembles in northern France, with its Notre-Dame basilica, castle-museum and cobbled streets. The fishing port, seafood restaurants on Quai Gambetta and the Opal Coast's fine sandy beaches complete an appealing picture.

Route

Route Lille → Boulogne-sur-Mer

From Lille, take the A25 towards Dunkirk then the A26 towards Calais/Boulogne. Exit 4 'Boulogne-sur-Mer' brings you to the centre in 10 minutes. The route crosses the Flanders plains then the Artois hills. After Saint-Omer, the landscape becomes more rolling with the first Boulonnais foothills. The approach to Boulogne from the plateau offers an open view of the sea and cliffs. Alternative: the A16 via Calais is longer but runs along the coast for the last kilometres.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Lille → Boulogne-sur-Mer route

Book Nausicaá tickets online to skip the queue (peak attendance during school holidays and rainy weekends). Boulogne's fish market (Quai Gambetta, every morning) is an authentic experience: fresh fish landed that very morning. The upper old town can be explored on foot in 1-2 hours. For a spectacular view, climb the Grande Armée column (at Wimille, 3 km north) erected by Napoleon. In summer, the beaches of Le Portel and Wimereux (neighbouring towns) are less crowded than the central beach.
