The site's history is marked by World War II: Carpiquet airfield, occupied by the Luftwaffe, was the scene of fierce fighting between Canadian troops and the 12th SS Hitlerjugend Division in July 1944 — the Battle of Carpiquet was one of the most violent in the Normandy campaign. A Canadian memorial stands on the airport grounds.
