About these fares
In France, night-time taxi fares are regulated by ministerial order. The switch to night rates happens at 7pm and returns to day rates at 7am. In Paris, rate B (night within Paris) replaces rate A, representing a surcharge of about 28%. In the suburbs, rate C (night outside Paris) applies with a surcharge that can reach 41%. The rooftop light on the taxi changes colour to indicate the current rate: green for rate A, orange for B, and side lights illuminate. On Sundays and public holidays, rate D applies all day long. Airport flat rates remain the same day and night.
Tips to save money
To pay less for a night taxi, book ahead on TaxiNeo: the fixed price does not change between day and night. If you take a metered taxi, note that airport flat rates (CDG and Orly) have no night surcharge, often making them the best value. After an evening out, share a taxi with others to split the bill. Noctilien (RATP night buses) run from midnight to 5.30am and offer a cheap alternative. Avoid the exact rate-change time (7pm) when the meter switches. For returns from restaurants or shows, advance booking avoids waiting.

The night rate is automatically applied by the taximeter at 7pm. The driver cannot manually select the rate. If in doubt, check the rooftop light: it shows the current rate. Card payment is mandatory around the clock. Night taxis are the same vehicles as during the day; there is no dedicated night fleet. For journeys after 1am, waiting times may be longer.
