The taxi crossing from Ajaccio to Bastia is far more than a simple transfer — it is a complete immersion into the heart of Corsica through the island's most iconic landscapes. This 150-kilometre journey follows the N193 national road, the backbone of Corsica, linking its two historic capitals across the central mountain chain. Ajaccio, Napoleon Bonaparte's birthplace, charms visitors with its spectacular gulf, golden sandy beaches and lively markets. Bastia, on the other side, is Corsica's economic hub with its picturesque old port framed by the Genoese citadel and the twin bell towers of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church overlooking Place Saint-Nicolas, one of France's largest squares. The route traverses strikingly diverse scenery: the Gravona valley lined with centuries-old chestnut trees, the majestic Vizzavona forest of endemic laricio pines, the Vizzavona pass at 1,163 metres where the famous GR20 hiking trail crosses, and the descent to the eastern plain and Tyrrhenian coast.

Route

Route Ajaccio → Bastia

Departing Ajaccio via the main Cours Napoléon, you quickly join the N193 towards Corte and Bastia. The road climbs through the Gravona gorge past perched villages like Bocognano, famous for its chestnut fair. The hairpin bends tighten as altitude increases through dense maquis fragrant with cistus, myrtle and heather. After about an hour, you reach the Vizzavona pass (1,163 m), the mythical crossing point between Southern and Upper Corsica, surrounded by one of the Mediterranean's finest forests. The descent to Corte offers vertiginous views of the Vecchio gorges and its famous Eiffel Bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel. Corte, the former capital of independent Corsica under Pascal Paoli, marks the halfway point with its spectacular citadel perched on a rocky outcrop. The N193 then continues north through the Lancone defile before opening onto the Bastia plain and the port city.

The N193 is a mountain road with numerous tight bends, especially between Bocognano and the Vizzavona pass. The driver can stop at the Vizzavona pass for a coffee break — it is also a starting point for GR20 hikes. Temperatures can vary dramatically between the Ajaccio coast (35°C) and the pass (20°C) in summer, so bring a layer.
