Calvi, the pearl of the Corsican Balagne, is one of the most enchanting destinations on the Isle of Beauty. Its massive Genoese citadel, rising from a rocky headland above a crescent-shaped bay of fine sand and pine groves, creates a breathtakingly beautiful scene revealed at the last bend in the road. The 95-kilometre taxi journey from Bastia crosses northern Corsica through magnificent mountain scenery before emerging onto the luminous Balagne coast. Calvi proudly claims to be Christopher Columbus's birthplace — a debated thesis passionately upheld by locals. The citadel houses the ruins of the explorer's supposed home, with rampart views spanning the entire bay and the Revellata peninsula. The Balagne, nicknamed the 'garden of Corsica', is a region of gentle hills covered with olive trees and citrus orchards, dotted with perched stone villages — Pigna, Sant'Antonino ranked among France's most beautiful villages, and Lumio immortalised by Laetitia Casta.

Route

Route Bastia → Calvi

Departing Bastia via the N193 southward, you first cross the eastern plain of Biguglia and its coastal lagoon, a nature reserve home to flamingos and ospreys. At Casamozza, the road turns west onto the N197, climbing gradually into the mountains of Upper Corsica. You pass through the Lancone defile, a narrow spectacular gorge cut into schist, before reaching Ponte Leccia, the island's strategic road and rail junction. From Ponte Leccia, the N197 heads due west through the upper Balagne, crossing modest passes with grand panoramas of deep valleys and the snowy peaks of Monte Padro. The descent to the Balagne coast progressively reveals the Mediterranean, the perched villages of Aregno, Corbara and Monticello, then Île-Rousse with its plane-shaded Place Paoli. The final kilometres hug the coast to Calvi, with the citadel drawing majestically into view on its promontory.

Specific tips for the Bastia → Calvi route

The N197 is a mountain road with sharp bends between Ponte Leccia and the Balagne, but it is well maintained with extraordinary views. Allow 1h40 for the journey, or up to 2 hours in midsummer when tourist traffic clogs the Balagne road. If arriving in Bastia on the overnight ferry from Nice or Toulon, the driver can meet you at the port for a direct transfer to Calvi, arriving in time for breakfast overlooking the bay. In summer, Calvi hosts the Calvi on the Rocks jazz festival attracting thousands — book your taxi well ahead during this period.
