Bonifacio is arguably Corsica's most spectacular sight and one of the most striking landscapes in the entire Mediterranean. Perched atop immense white limestone cliffs plunging sheer into deep-blue waters, this fortified citadel seems to defy gravity with its medieval houses hanging over the void. The 130-kilometre taxi journey from Ajaccio crosses Southern Corsica through the island's most authentic hinterland. The Genoese citadel, built in the 12th century, overlooks the Strait of Bonifacio separating Corsica from Sardinia, just 12 kilometres away. On clear days, the Sardinian coast is distinctly visible on the horizon. The natural harbour, nestled at the end of a 1,500-metre limestone fjord, is one of the most sheltered havens in the Mediterranean. Boat excursions to sea caves sculpted by erosion, the Lavezzi Islands nature reserve with its translucent waters, and the Pertusato lighthouse are unforgettable experiences.

Route

Route Ajaccio → Bonifacio

The route from Ajaccio follows the N196 southward. The first hour crosses dense maquis and the granite hills of Southern Corsica, passing through Cauro and Petreto-Bicchisano in the Taravo valley. The road then descends to the Valinco gulf and Propriano, a lively port that makes a possible halfway stop. Continuing south, you reach Sartène, an austere granite town famous for its Easter Week processions among the most impressive in Christendom. From Sartène, the N196 dives south through increasingly mineral and wild terrain dotted with wind-sculpted rocks and semi-wild Corsican cattle and pigs. The final kilometres reveal a spectacular view of Bonifacio's white cliffs rising abruptly above the turquoise sea.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Ajaccio → Bonifacio route

The road is winding but well surfaced. In summer, Bonifacio is extremely busy and parking is virtually impossible in the upper town and near the port — a taxi solves this entirely by dropping you at your accommodation or citadel entrance. Book well ahead in July-August when demand is very high. For travellers wanting to combine Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio, the driver can adapt the route for a supplement. The wind can blow strongly through the strait (the famous Libecciu) — this does not affect the road but may impact boat excursions. Book sea trips on arrival.
