Porto-Vecchio, nicknamed the 'city of salt' after its ancient salt marshes, has become Corsica's most sought-after beach resort thanks to legendary beaches that rival the finest Caribbean shores. The 140-kilometre taxi journey from Ajaccio crosses southern Corsica through fragrant maquis, cork oak forests and granite mountains. Porto-Vecchio enchants visitors with Palombaggia and Santa Giulia beaches, regularly ranked among Europe's most beautiful, where pristine white sand meets crystalline waters of an unreal blue beneath wind-sculpted umbrella pines. The fortified old town perched above the gulf preserves its Genoese ramparts, shaded cobbled lanes and lively squares where Corsican specialities are savoured. The marina at the foot of the citadel welcomes yachts from around the world, giving the town a uniquely cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Route

Route Ajaccio → Porto-Vecchio

From Ajaccio, the N196 heads due south along the western coast. The first stretch follows the Gulf of Ajaccio with stunning views of the Sanguinaires Islands and the Parata tower, before heading inland through the Prunelli valley. You pass through Cauro and Petreto-Bicchisano, typical villages where time seems to stand still. After Olmeto, the road descends to the Valinco gulf and Propriano, a pleasant resort at the halfway point. The N196 continues to Sartène, called by Prosper Mérimée 'the most Corsican of Corsican towns', with its medieval grey granite old town. From Sartène, the route turns east via the D268 and N198, descending to Porto-Vecchio. The approach offers a striking view of Porto-Vecchio's gulf backed by the Alta Rocca mountains.
