Revel is a magnificent medieval bastide founded in 1342 by Philippe VI de Valois, on the edge of the Montagne Noire and the Lauragais. Its historic centre revolves around a central arcaded square — one of the finest in France — with its 14th-century covered market hall supported by massive stone and brick pillars, topped by an octagonal belfry. This hall has hosted a market for 700 years, the pride of the region. Revel is the French capital of art furniture: since the 18th century, dozens of cabinetmakers, marquetry artists, gilders and lacquerers have perpetuated a craft of excellence, labelled 'Ville et Metiers d'Art' (City of Art and Crafts). The Wood and Marquetry Museum presents pieces of extraordinary virtuosity. A few kilometres away, Lake Saint-Ferreol, a reservoir built by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century to feed the Canal du Midi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as part of the Canal du Midi). The lake offers supervised swimming in summer, hiking trails and a museum dedicated to Riquet. The nearby Montagne Noire, with its beech forests, waterfalls and stone villages, is a wonderful playground for nature lovers. Revel combines medieval heritage, craft excellence and preserved nature just 45 minutes from Toulouse.
Route
Route Toulouse → Revel
From Toulouse, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A61 motorway (Autoroute des Deux Mers) towards Carcassonne. After Villefranche-de-Lauragais, you leave the motorway to take the D622 towards Revel. The landscape is deep Lauragais: undulating hills covered in wheat, rapeseed and sunflowers, pink-brick farms and hilltop villages. The Montagne Noire gradually takes shape on the horizon, a dark forested mass dominating the plain. Arrival in Revel is via the Toulouse road, with a view of the market hall belfry emerging from the canal-tile rooftops. A61 tolls amount to approximately €4. The journey takes 45 minutes under normal conditions. The D622, well-maintained, is pleasant and lightly trafficked outside Saturday mornings (market day).

The Revel market (Saturday morning) is ranked among the finest markets in France — do not miss it. Under the 14th-century hall and on the arcaded square, over 200 stalls offer farm produce, Lauragais poultry, cassoulet, Pyrenees cheeses, artisanal pastries. The atmosphere is festive and authentic. Plan to arrive before 10am to enjoy it fully. The Wood and Marquetry Museum (free) is worth a visit to discover the art of Revel cabinetmaking. Lake Saint-Ferreol (8 km) is a must: swimming in summer, hiking around the lake (5 km, 1h30), museum and Riquet gardens. For a Montagne Noire escape, ask the driver to take you to Soreze (10 km): the former royal abbey-school, now a cultural centre, houses the Dom Robert Museum (contemporary Aubusson tapestries).
