Cavaillon, a town of 27,000 inhabitants nestled at the foot of the Saint-Jacques hill on the right bank of the Durance, is world-famous for its melon, the emblematic fruit of Provencal summer that so inspired Alexandre Dumas he bequeathed his library to the town in exchange for an annual stipend of twelve melons. Beyond this gastronomic fame, Cavaillon is a town of history: its 18th-century synagogue, one of the oldest in France, bears witness to the importance of the Jewish community of the Comtat Venaissin. The Roman arch on Place du Clos, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Veran and the panorama from the Saint-Jacques chapel complete a rich heritage. Above all, Cavaillon is the western gateway to the Luberon: Gordes, Roussillon, Menerbes, Lacoste and Bonnieux are all within 30 minutes. The Monday morning market, one of Provence's largest alongside Apt's, takes over the entire town centre. From Marseille, a taxi is ideal for quickly reaching this Luberon holiday base, especially for families with luggage arriving by plane or TGV.

Route

Route Marseille → Cavaillon

Departing from Marseille, your driver joins the A7 (Autoroute du Soleil) via the L2 ring road or Joliette tunnel. The motorway crosses northern Marseille past Plan-de-Campagne and Septemes-les-Vallons. After the Lancon-de-Provence toll (approximately 7 euros), the landscape opens onto the Durance plain with the Alpilles visible to the west and the first Luberon foothills to the northeast. The Cavaillon exit leads directly to the D973 crossing orchards and market gardens — it is in this fertile soil irrigated by the Canal de Carpentras that the famous melons grow. Entry to town is via the Boulevard du Pont or the southern bypass depending on your destination. Your driver can drop you in the historic centre (Place du Clos, Cours Gambetta), at the market (Mondays), or continue to Luberon villages. The journey takes 55 minutes in normal conditions but can reach 1h20 on Friday evenings in summer, mainly at the Lancon toll and through Salon-de-Provence.

Specific tips for the Marseille → Cavaillon route

Cavaillon market is held on Monday mornings and takes over the entire town centre — it is the Vaucluse's largest weekly market. Arrive early (before 9am) for the freshness and best stalls. From June to September, taste the Cavaillon melon IGP: the best are found at the farmers' market or directly from producers along the road to Apt. The Saint-Jacques hill (30-min walk up from the centre) offers a 360-degree panorama over the Luberon, Ventoux, Alpilles and Durance — one of Provence's finest views, especially at sunset. The synagogue and Jewish Comtadin museum (Place Castil-Blaze) deserve a visit: they are among the rare remnants of the carrieres (Jewish quarters) of the Comtat Venaissin. If exploring the Luberon, Cavaillon is an excellent base: Gordes 20 min, Roussillon 30 min, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse 15 min. Our hourly hire formula is ideal for a day circuit.
