Gordes is one of Provence's most spectacular villages, clinging to a cliff face above the Calavon valley in the Luberon. Its honey-stone houses tiered up the hillside, dominated by an imposing Renaissance château, form a tableau photographed by millions of visitors each year. The village is listed as one of France's 'Most Beautiful Villages' and has attracted artists such as Vasarely, Chagall and Pol Mara. Just 4 km away, Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey, founded by Cistercians in 1148, is Provence's iconic image with lavender fields stretching before its Romanesque façade from June to August. The Village des Bories, a collection of dry-stone huts, bears witness to ancestral Provençal habitation.
Route
Route Marseille → Gordes
From Marseille, take the A7 north then the A51 towards Aix-en-Provence/Apt. Exit at Cavaillon (exit 25) and take the D2 then D15 which climbs in hairpins towards Gordes. The approach to Gordes via D15 offers the Luberon's most famous viewpoint: the entire village appears clinging to the cliff. For Sénanque Abbey, continue on the D177 north of Gordes (narrow road through a gorge). The journey crosses magnificent landscapes: vineyards, cherry trees, olive groves and garrigue.
Main route: A7 puis A51, sortie Cavaillon, D2/D15 — ~8 € (sections A7+A51)

Specific tips for the Marseille → Gordes route
Lavender at Sénanque blooms from mid-June to mid-August: the most photogenic period. Arrive before 10am in summer to avoid crowds (the abbey car park is tiny). Gordes market (Tuesday morning) is one of Provence's finest. Combine Gordes with Roussillon (ochre village, 10 km) and Ménerbes for a complete Luberon circuit. In summer, Luberon temperatures often exceed 35°C: bring water and a hat. Our driver can organise a full-day Luberon circuit.
