Hendaye is the last French town on the Atlantic coast before Spain, a unique confluence of Basque culture, French heritage and Iberian proximity. Located at the mouth of the Bidassoa, the border river between France and Spain, Hendaye boasts the largest beach on the Basque coast: over 3 km of fine sand in a protected bay shape, facing the Spanish town of Hondarribia (Fontarrabie) across the estuary. This exceptional west-facing beach is one of the rare Basque coast beaches offering safe family swimming thanks to its cove configuration. The Château-Observatoire d'Abbadia, perched on the cliffs of the Abbadia Estate, is a fanciful neo-Gothic monument built by Viollet-le-Duc for Antoine d'Abbadie, a 19th-century Basque explorer and scientist who had lived in Ethiopia. The château houses an astronomical observatory still in operation, and its orientalist interiors are stunning. The Basque Corniche, a coastal path between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz (12 km), is one of France's most beautiful coastal walks: flysch cliffs sculpted by erosion, wild coves and panoramas of the Spanish coast and the Pyrenees. The Île des Faisans (Pheasant Island), a tiny islet in the middle of the Bidassoa, is a unique Franco-Spanish condominium: sovereignty alternates between the two countries every six months. It was here that the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed in 1659.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Hendaye

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the southern ring road then the A63 towards Spain. The motorway crosses the Landes forest, passes Dax and Bayonne. After Bayonne, you follow the Basque coast via the A63: the Pyrenees appear on the horizon. You pass Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz (interchanges without entering the towns). The Hendaye exit is the last before the Spanish border. Arrival at Hendaye offers a magnificent view of the bay, the Bidassoa and Hondarribia in Spain. A63 tolls amount to approximately €20. The journey is smooth except on summer weekends and Spanish public holidays (cross-border traffic). Note: Hendaye is the gateway to San Sebastián (Donostia), just 20 km into Spain.

Hendaye beach is the most family-friendly on the Basque coast: 3 km of sand, shallow water, supervised swimming. Ideal for children. The Château d'Abbadia (€8, 1h guided tour) is fascinating: Viollet-le-Duc neo-Gothic architecture, Ethiopian interiors, astronomical observatory. The Abbadia Estate around the château is a protected natural area with cliff-top hiking trails. The Basque Corniche (Hendaye → Saint-Jean-de-Luz, 12 km, 3h30 on foot) is spectacular: cliffs, coves and Pyrenees views. For a trip to Spain, Hondarribia is 10 min by boat (maritime shuttle, €2) or 15 min by car: medieval old town, pintxos and Spanish atmosphere. San Sebastián is 30 min away — our drivers can take you there (supplement of about €40). The Hendaye market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings) offers Basque products: Espelette pepper, sheep's cheese, Basque cake, txakoli.
