Paying for a taxi by card
Everything you need to know about card payment in French taxis: your rights, driver obligations and alternatives.
Card payment is mandatory
Since 1 July 2022, all French taxis are required to accept card payment with no minimum amount. This obligation applies to all fares, regardless of the sum. The payment terminal must be functional and available to the passenger. A driver who refuses card payment is committing an offence.
What to do if the driver refuses your card
If a driver refuses your bank card, note their licence number and report the incident to the police prefecture or the DGCCRF (consumer protection). You are not required to pay in cash if you intended to pay by card. Refusal to accept a card can result in a fine of up to 750 euros for the driver.
Accepted payment methods
Taxis must accept Visa, Mastercard and CB (Carte Bancaire) cards. Contactless payment (NFC) is increasingly common. Some taxis also accept Apple Pay and Google Pay. With TaxiNeo, online payment is secure and you have nothing to settle in the vehicle.
