Taxi fares: French regulations explained

Understand the regulated fare system for French taxis: official tariff bands, day and night rates, flat fares and authorised surcharges.

The A, B, C, D fare system

French taxis apply four regulated fare bands. Rate A applies during daytime (10am-5pm) for urban journeys. Rate B covers night-time urban rides or daytime suburban rides. Rate C applies at night in suburbs and on Sundays. Rate D is the highest, reserved for night rides on Sundays and public holidays. These rates are set annually by prefectural order.

Pick-up charge and minimum fare

Every taxi ride starts with a fixed pick-up charge, currently 2.60 euros in Ile-de-France. A minimum fare is guaranteed: 7.30 euros in Paris in 2026. Even for very short rides, this minimum applies. The pick-up charge is activated as soon as the meter starts, before the vehicle even moves.

Mandatory airport flat fares

Since 2016, flat fares for journeys between Paris and the airports are mandatory. The Paris-CDG fare is 56 euros (right bank) or 65 euros (left bank). The Paris-Orly fare is 36 euros (left bank) or 45 euros (right bank). These flat fares apply regardless of traffic or time. With TaxiNeo, all journeys benefit from fixed prices, not just airports.

Authorised surcharges

Regulations allow certain surcharges: 4th passenger (4 euros), phone or app booking (4 euros), bulky luggage in the boot (2 euros). The driver must clearly display these surcharges in the vehicle. Any surcharge not provided for by regulations is prohibited. TaxiNeo includes all surcharges in the displayed fixed price.

Enforcement and penalties

Taxi fares are monitored by the DGCCRF (consumer protection authority). A driver who does not comply with regulated fares faces a fine of 1,500 euros. The meter must be checked annually and sealed by an approved body. The applicable fare schedule must be displayed in the vehicle in view of the passenger.
