Tarbes, prefecture of Hautes-Pyrénées, is the gateway to the central Pyrenees. Dominated to the south by the Pyrenean chain and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2,877 m), accessible by cable car from La Mongie, Tarbes offers a unique blend of urban culture and mountain nature. The town is known for its National Stud (founded by Napoleon in 1806), its Massey Gardens (one of the finest parks in southwest France) and its Hussars Museum. Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport serves international flights, particularly pilgrims to Lourdes. Tarbes is also an ideal base for ski resorts (Grand Tourmalet, Cauterets) and hikes in the Pyrenees National Park.
