Bagnères-de-Luchon, known simply as 'Luchon' to locals, has been called the 'Queen of the Pyrenees' since the 19th century. This spa town of 2,500 inhabitants, nestled at 630 m altitude in the Pique valley at the foot of the highest peaks of the central Pyrenees (Aneto 3,404 m, Maladeta, Venasque), has been a prestigious resort since Roman times. Luchon's thermal baths, fed by 80 sulphurous springs between 18deg and 72degC, were already frequented by Roman legionaries under the name Ilixon. In the 19th century, Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie stayed here, transforming Luchon into a fashionable resort. The Allees d'Etigny, a majestic promenade lined with century-old lime trees, connects the thermal baths to the town centre in a Belle Epoque atmosphere. The Superbagneres ski station (1,800-2,260 m, accessible by gondola from Luchon) offers a ski domain facing the Aneto massif, the highest peak of the Pyrenees. In summer, Luchon is the starting point for exceptional hikes: Lac de Oo, the Lys valley with its 270 m Cascade d'Enfer, the Hospice de France, the Col du Portillon to Spain. The Tour de France cycling race regularly uses the Luchon cols (Peyresourde, Superbagneres). A taxi from Toulouse is particularly suited to spa guests (often elderly with heavy luggage), winter skiers (bulky equipment), and hikers wanting direct valley access without a car.
