Saint-Tropez and Marseille represent two captivating worlds within maritime Provence. On one side, the postcard-perfect village where billionaires' yachts mingle with fishermen's pointus in a tiny sun-drenched harbour, where the place des Lices buzzes with petanque games and Provencal markets, and where Pampelonne beach stretches its fine sand between Ramatuelle and the umbrella pines. On the other, Marseille, the 2,600-year-old Phocaean city, France's second-largest, vibrant and cosmopolitan, with its Vieux-Port fish market, the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica standing sentinel on its hilltop, the striking contemporary MuCEM museum, and the wild Calanques national park. The taxi journey between these two Provencal gems crosses the entire Var coastline, offering a succession of exceptional panoramas: the glittering Gulf of Saint-Tropez, hidden coves between Cavalaire and Le Lavandou, perched villages of Bormes-les-Mimosas and Le Castellet, and the majestic Toulon harbour before heading to Marseille on the A50 coastal motorway.

Route

Route Saint-Tropez → Marseille

From Saint-Tropez, the route takes the D98A to La Foux, then the D559 west through Cogolin and La Croix-Valmer. The road hugs the Var coastline between Cavalaire-sur-Mer and Le Lavandou with the Hyeres Islands as backdrop. After Bormes-les-Mimosas, you join the D98 dual carriageway and then the A57 towards Toulon. Toulon is bypassed via its tunnel (3 km, free), emerging on the A50 towards Marseille. The A50 follows the coast past Bandol, La Ciotat and Cassis before crossing the limestone hills into Marseille. Arrival is via the A50 urban motorway serving the Vieux-Port, Saint-Charles station and the southern districts.

Specific tips for the Saint-Tropez → Marseille route

As with all journeys from Saint-Tropez, leaving the peninsula is the critical point in summer. Plan an early morning departure (before 9am) or evening (after 7pm) to avoid D98A gridlock. Once on the motorway, the journey flows smoothly outside peak hours. The Toulon tunnel may have brief slowdowns but serious jams are rare. If heading to Marseille-Provence Airport, note it is at Marignane north of Marseille — the driver will adjust the route accordingly, avoiding the city centre. Wine lovers can request a stop at a Cotes de Provence vineyard along the way between Saint-Tropez and Toulon.
