Frejus, founded by Julius Caesar in 49 BC as Forum Julii, is one of France's oldest cities and boasts an exceptional Roman heritage. Its ancient amphitheatre, aqueduct and theatre bear witness to the importance of this Roman colony that served as a military port for Augustus' fleet. The taxi ride from Saint-Tropez is one of the shortest departures from the peninsula, yet it offers varied and enchanting scenery. Leaving the mythical harbour where yachts glisten in the Mediterranean sun, the road hugs the Gulf of Saint-Tropez through Sainte-Maxime, a popular family resort known for its sandy beaches and casino. Beyond Sainte-Maxime, the route crosses pine forests and the first foothills of the Esterel massif, famous for its red porphyry rocks plunging into turquoise waters. Frejus also charms visitors with its medieval episcopal complex — a 5th-century baptistery, cathedral and cloister — and Port-Frejus, a modern marina with shops and restaurants. The town is an ideal starting point for exploring the Blavet gorges and Esterel hiking trails.

Route

Route Saint-Tropez → Fréjus

From Saint-Tropez, the route follows the D98A towards La Foux, then continues on the D559 towards Sainte-Maxime along the northern shore of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. The road hugs the coastline, passing through the port of Sainte-Maxime and its beaches. After Sainte-Maxime, the D559 moves slightly inland through Roquebrune-sur-Argens and Puget-sur-Argens before reaching Frejus from the northeast. Entry into Frejus is via the boulevard de la Liberation serving the historic centre and the Roman amphitheatre. For Port-Frejus or the beaches, the driver continues south towards the nature reserve.

Specific tips for the Saint-Tropez → Fréjus route

This is one of the easiest journeys from Saint-Tropez as the D559 towards Sainte-Maxime is less congested than the D98A southward. Even so, a morning or late afternoon departure is preferable in midsummer to avoid slowdowns near Sainte-Maxime. If visiting the Roman amphitheatre and the episcopal complex, ask the driver to drop you right at the site. The Frejus market runs on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and is worth a visit for Provencal produce. For an evening return to Saint-Tropez, book in advance as finding a taxi on the spot is difficult on the peninsula.
