Hendaye is the last French commune before the Spanish border, separated from Irun by the Bidassoa river and from picturesque Hondarribia by the Txingudi bay. The town boasts the Basque Coast's longest beach (3.5 km of fine sand), ideal for families with its calm, shallow waters. The Deux Jumeaux (Twin Rocks) rising from the ocean are the town's iconic symbol. The Château Observatoire d'Abbadia, built by Viollet-le-Duc for scientist Antoine d'Abbadie in the 19th century, is a neo-Gothic jewel overlooking the wild cliffs of the Basque Corniche. The Corniche between Ciboure and Hendaye is one of France's most beautiful coastal paths: seven kilometres of cliffs plunging into the Atlantic, wild coves and heather-covered moorland, with sweeping views of the Pyrenees and the Spanish coast. The Conference Island in the Bidassoa is the world's smallest condominium, shared between France and Spain since 1659.
