Laon is one of northern France's most spectacular towns, perched on a 100 m butte dominating the Picardy plain. Its fortified upper town, enclosed by 7 km of medieval ramparts and accessed by the Poma 2000 (France's only automatic funicular), houses exceptional heritage. Notre-Dame de Laon Cathedral (1155-1235) is one of France's first Gothic masterpieces, predating Notre-Dame de Paris — its five towers, with the famous sculpted oxen at the summit (honouring the oxen that hauled the stones), its sculpted portal and remarkably pure nave make it a landmark in art history. Hugo, Viollet-le-Duc and even the Chartres masters drew inspiration from it. The former Saint-Martin abbey, the episcopal palace (museum), the Hôtel-Dieu and the cobbled upper town lanes create a preserved medieval atmosphere. Laon is also the gateway to the Chemin des Dames, a Great War memorial site (1917), with the Dragon's Cavern and many military cemeteries.

Specific tips for the Reims → Laon route
The Notre-Dame Cathedral is an absolute must: its sculpted oxen atop the towers are unique in Europe. Climb the rampart walk (via tourist office, guided tour €7) for 360° plain views. The Poma 2000, an automatic funicular linking lower and upper town (free), is a unique French technical curiosity. Walk the 7 km ramparts to discover the fortified gates (Porte d'Ardon, Porte de Soissons). The Chemin des Dames is 20 min south: the Dragon's Cavern (underground museum, €8) is a poignant 1917 memorial.
