Châlons-en-Champagne is the Marne prefecture, a waterside town nicknamed the 'Sparkling Venice' thanks to the Mau and Nau canals crossing its historic centre. The town boasts exceptional religious heritage with two UNESCO World Heritage buildings on the Camino de Santiago: the collegiate church of Notre-Dame-en-Vaux, a masterpiece of early Gothic (12th century) with an extraordinary Romanesque cloister of sculpted columns, and the church of Saint-Alpin with its Renaissance stained glass. The Saint-Étienne Cathedral dominates the town with stained glass from the 12th to 19th centuries considered among France's finest. The Jard quarter, with its English-style gardens along the Marne, is one of the Grand Est region's most beautiful urban parks. Châlons hosts the Foire de Châlons every summer, one of France's largest funfairs (500,000 visitors).
