Metz is one of France's oldest cities, founded over 3,000 years ago, and Lorraine's other great capital alongside Nancy. Saint-Étienne Cathedral, nicknamed the 'Lantern of God', holds the largest stained glass surface of any cathedral in the world: 6,500 m² of windows by Hermann de Münster, Théobald de Lixheim, Valentin Bousch, and in the 20th century, Marc Chagall and Jacques Villon. Its Gothic nave, 42 metres high, is France's third tallest after Beauvais and Amiens. The Centre Pompidou-Metz, opened in 2010, is the first decentralised Centre Pompidou art space, housed in a spectacular building by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines with a hexagonal wooden roof resembling a Chinese hat. The German Imperial Quarter (Neue Stadt), built 1902-1918 during annexation, is a unique architectural ensemble blending Rhenish neo-Romanesque, Jugendstil and neo-Renaissance styles.

Route

Route Nancy → Metz

Your driver takes the A31 from Nancy towards Metz. The motorway follows the Moselle valley through the Lorraine corridor, the historic communication axis between the two cities. You pass Pont-à-Mousson, a former Jesuit university town whose Premonstratensian abbey (18th century), a magnificent Baroque ensemble, is visible from the motorway. Landscapes alternate between wooded Moselle hills and agricultural plains. Tolls about €4 (included). Allow 45 min normally, 1h at peak hours when cross-border worker traffic adds to local congestion.
