Nice, France's fifth-largest city and undisputed capital of the French Riviera, is Monaco's closest major neighbour. Separated by just 20 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline, these two iconic destinations are connected by one of Europe's most spectacular routes. The taxi journey from Monaco to Nice runs along limestone cliffs dropping into deep-blue seas, through perched Riviera villages, with breathtaking views over the Baie des Anges. Nice captivates visitors with its famous Promenade des Anglais, colourful Old Town alleys, the flower-filled Cours Saleya market and world-class museums including the Matisse Museum, MAMAC and the Chagall Museum.

Route

Route Monaco → Nice

From Monaco, two main routes lead to Nice. The Basse Corniche (M6098) is the most scenic: it hugs the shoreline through Beausoleil, Cap-d'Ail with its renowned Mala beach, then Villefranche-sur-Mer and its spectacular bay. You then pass Nice's port before reaching the Promenade des Anglais. The A8 motorway is the fastest option, bypassing the relief through the Monaco tunnel and reaching Nice from above with sweeping views of the coastline. The driver will choose the best route based on traffic and your preferences.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Monaco → Nice route

In summer and during the Monaco Grand Prix (late May), traffic on the Basse Corniche can be extremely heavy. Opt for the A8 for a smoother ride. If heading to Old Nice, parking is nearly impossible there — a taxi drops you right at the door. For evening returns from Nice, book ahead, especially on weekends and during peak tourist season.
