Cannes, world-famous for its International Film Festival, is one of the most glamorous cities on the Côte d'Azur. From Monaco, the 56-kilometre journey via the A8 crosses the heart of the French Riviera with changing panoramas of sea and pine-covered hills. Cannes dazzles with its Croisette boulevard lined with legendary palaces — the Carlton, the Martinez, the Majestic Barrière — and haute couture boutiques. The Palais des Festivals, stage of the world's most photographed red carpet, symbolises this city where film stars, yachtsmen and art de vivre enthusiasts converge. Beyond the glamour, the Suquet quarter, a former fishing village perched on a hill above the Old Port, offers authentic heritage, while the Lérins Islands provide a nature escape just 15 minutes by boat.

Route

Route Monaco → Cannes

The route follows the A8 motorway (La Provençale) towards Aix-en-Provence from Monaco. After the Monaco tunnel, the motorway crosses the heights of Nice without descending into the city, passes above Nice Airport, then runs alongside Cagnes-sur-Mer, Villeneuve-Loubet and Antibes. You'll spot the Fort Carré in Antibes and the yachts of Port Vauban, Europe's largest marina. Exit 42 'Cannes — Mougins' takes you directly to the town centre and the Croisette within minutes. Alternatively, the coastal road via the N98 through Nice, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins is longer (1h30) but reveals the entire Riviera coastline.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Monaco → Cannes route

During the Cannes Film Festival (mid-May), traffic around the Palais des Festivals is heavily disrupted. Book your taxi at least 48 hours ahead and allow extra travel time. The driver knows bypass routes to reach the Croisette via side streets. Outside the Festival, the journey is smooth and fast. If staying at a Cannes palace hotel, the driver drops you directly under the hotel awning. For evening returns to Monaco, book in advance as on-the-spot taxis are scarce.
