Villefranche-sur-Mer boasts one of the most beautiful harbours in the Mediterranean, a natural amphitheatre of deep turquoise waters that has welcomed royal galleys, US Navy ships and today the world's largest cruise liners. Founded in 1295 by Charles II of Anjou as a 'free port' (hence its name), the town has preserved its authentic character with its old town of medieval lanes including the famous Rue Obscure, a 13th-century covered passageway unique in Europe. The Chapel of Saint-Pierre on the harbour was entirely decorated in 1957 by Jean Cocteau in a dreamlike style celebrating fishermen and the life of Saint Peter. The 16th-century citadel, built by the Duke of Savoy, now houses the town hall and several museums. This little coastal jewel is an essential stop between Nice and Monaco.
Route
Route Nice → Villefranche-sur-Mer
From Nice, the most direct route follows the Basse Corniche (M6098) eastward. After the port of Nice and the Mont-Boron district, the road winds down towards the Villefranche harbour, offering a spectacular view over the bay. The driver drops you either at the Port de la Darse (for the citadel and old village) or on Quai Amiral-Courbet (for the Cocteau chapel and seafront restaurants). The Moyenne Corniche (D6007) offers a sweeping view over the harbour from above, before descending to the village via the Route de la Grande-Bretagne. This route is slightly longer but the panorama is exceptional.

Specific tips for the Nice → Villefranche-sur-Mer route
Villefranche-sur-Mer is a favourite stop for cruise ships: on port days (check the port website), the village is flooded with passengers. Choose a cruise-free day for a peaceful visit. The Marinières beach, sand and pebble, is one of the few beaches accessible on foot from the centre. The Rue Obscure, a medieval vaulted passage, is free and takes 5 minutes to explore: don't miss it. For lunch, the restaurants on Quai Amiral-Courbet offer stunning harbour views. The market is held Saturday morning on Place de la Victoire. Parking is very limited in summer: a taxi is the ideal solution.
