Valberg is the quintessential family ski resort of the Alpes-Maritimes, nestled at 1,670 metres altitude between the Var and Cians valleys. Founded in 1936, it was the department's first ski resort and remains the most accessible from Nice. Its ski area extends from 1,430 to 2,100 metres with 90 km of runs for all levels, set among larch forests and Mercantour peak panoramas. Valberg has earned the 'Famille Plus Montagne' label thanks to its child-focused facilities: snow garden, safe green runs, childcare and entertainment. The resort maintains an authentic mountain village atmosphere with wooden chalets, cosy restaurants and a relaxed vibe, far from the bustle of large resorts. In summer, Valberg transforms into a hiking and mountain biking base with marked trails through alpine pastures and upper Var forests. The journey from Nice is itself a spectacle, ascending the Var valley then the spectacular Cians Gorges, a canyon with blood-red schist walls that rank among the most impressive in the Southern Alps. The village of Beuil, 5 km from Valberg, adds medieval charm to this mountain destination.

Route

Route Nice → Valberg

From Nice, take the M6202 along the Var valley northward. After about 55 km, at Pont-de-Cians, turn left onto the D28 which climbs through the Cians Gorges. This spectacular road passes through deep gorges with red rock walls, under tunnels carved into the rock and alongside the Cians torrent. After the gorges, the road climbs to Beuil then reaches Valberg in a few hairpin bends. The entire route follows departmental roads with no tolls. In winter, the road is regularly cleared but conditions can be challenging in the gorges during heavy snowfall or frost. Our drivers know this road perfectly and are equipped with snow tyres and chains for maximum safety.
