Tende is a mountain village in the upper Roya valley, only attached to France in 1947 following a historic plebiscite. This fortified town set against a rocky cliff is the gateway to the Valley of Wonders, a unique archaeological site containing over 40,000 rock engravings dating from the Bronze Age (3300-1800 BC) at the foot of Mont Bégo (2,872 m). The Departmental Museum of Wonders, in the village centre, displays casts and explanations of these exceptional petroglyphs. Tende is also the arrival point of the famous Train des Merveilles, the Nice-Cuneo railway inaugurated in 1928, an engineering masterpiece with 80 tunnels and 4 helical bridges crossing the Maritime Alps. The village retains its Alpine character with its stone-slab roofs, carved lintels and 15th-century Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. Storm Alex in October 2020 severely damaged the valley, but Tende and its infrastructure are now rebuilt and accessible.
Route
Route Nice → Tende
From Nice, take the M6204 towards Sospel via the Col de Braus (1,002 m). After Sospel, the road descends into the Roya valley and follows the river northward through the spectacular Saorge gorges. You will pass through the perched village of Saorge (a 5-minute detour for one of France's most beautiful villages), then La Brigue before arriving in Tende. The road is winding but well maintained, with grand Alpine panoramas. Alternative: take the A8 to Ventimiglia then drive up the Roya valley on the Italian side (Airole, Breil-sur-Roya); this route is longer but less winding.

Specific tips for the Nice → Tende route
The Valley of Wonders is only accessible on foot from June to October (snow the rest of the year). Hikes to the engravings start from the Refuge des Merveilles (2h30 walk from Lac des Mesches). An accredited guide is mandatory in the protected zone. The Museum of Wonders in Tende is free and open year-round: visit it before your hike. The Col de Braus road has 17 hairpin bends: the professional driver knows this road by heart. Bring warm clothes even in summer: Tende is at 800 m altitude. Tende market is on Wednesday mornings. The road via Sospel is now fully operational again after the post-Storm Alex repairs.

Detailed comparison of transport options
The Train des Merveilles (TER Nice–Tende) is itself an attraction: 2 hours for about €12, with 80 tunnels and an audio commentary on the line's history. It is the most spectacular transport mode. However, it runs only 4-5 times a day and does not serve the hiking trailheads. A taxi offers flexibility: departure at your chosen time, stops at Sospel and Saorge, and drop-off at the Lac des Mesches car park for direct access to the Valley of Wonders.
