Sospel is a preserved medieval town nestled at the confluence of the Bévéra and Merlanson rivers, in the mountainous hinterland between Nice and the Italian border. Its emblem is the Pont Vieux (13th century), a fortified toll bridge spanning the Bévéra, one of the last of its kind in Europe. The central tower once served to collect tolls and housed a garrison. Rebuilt after the 1944 bombings, it retains its picturesque medieval silhouette. The Cathedral of Saint-Michel, a masterpiece of Nice baroque with its trompe-l'oeil facade, contains a 15th-century altarpiece by François Bréa. Sospel was an important crossroads on the Royal Road linking Nice to Turin, and the village retains traces of this commercial past with its arcades, small squares and colourful-fronted houses along the river. Fort Saint-Roch, a structure of the Alpine Maginot Line built in the 1930s, is open for visits and offers a unique testimony to inter-war military architecture.
Route
Route Nice → Sospel
From Nice, the M6204 (former Royal Road) climbs in spectacular hairpin bends to the Col de Braus (1,002 m altitude, 17 switchbacks). The pass offers a magnificent panorama over the coast and Maritime Alps. After the pass, the road winds back down through chestnut and pine forests to Sospel, nestled in the valley at 350 m altitude. The journey takes about 45 minutes and offers a complete change of scenery just 40 km from the Promenade des Anglais. In winter, the Col de Braus may require snow equipment. Alternative: go via Menton then drive up the Bévéra valley (D2566), a longer route (1h15) but without a pass.

Specific tips for the Nice → Sospel route
The Pont Vieux is the village's focal point: the driver drops you at Place des Platanes right beside it. Visit the Cathedral of Saint-Michel (open daytime, free) for its exuberant baroque interior. Fort Saint-Roch is open weekends in season (€2, fascinating guided tour). Sospel market is on Thursday mornings at Place Saint-Nicolas. The village is an excellent starting point for hikes: the GR52 towards the Mercantour passes through Sospel. Have lunch by the Bévéra on a terrace serving Nice cuisine (ravioli, socca, Swiss chard pie). In summer, the river is pleasant for swimming (natural pools upstream of the village).
