San Remo, the 'Città dei Fiori' (City of Flowers), is the pearl of the Italian Riviera, just 60 km from Nice across the border. This elegant Ligurian seaside resort is world-famous for its Italian song festival, its Art Nouveau municipal casino — one of Europe's oldest — and its flower market supplying all of Europe with roses, carnations and mimosas. The old town, called La Pigna, is a medieval labyrinth of narrow lanes, arches and staircases climbing to the Madonna della Costa church overlooking the bay. The Corso Matteotti and Corso Imperatrice, lined with majestic palms, recall the golden age of 19th-century aristocratic winter tourism, when Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna and writer Alfred Nobel stayed here. San Remo's port hosts luxury yachts and its waterfront offers an enchanting Mediterranean promenade. The Ponente Ligure cycle path, built on the former coastal railway line, is one of Europe's finest. The journey from Nice follows the Mediterranean coast, passing through Monaco, Menton and Ventimiglia before reaching this town where dolce vita and Ligurian tradition blend with grace.

Route

Route Nice → San Remo

From Nice, take the A8 motorway towards Italy. After Menton, you cross the Franco-Italian border at the Ventimiglia tunnel (no border checks in the Schengen area, though customs officers may be present). The motorway becomes the Autostrada dei Fiori (A10) on the Italian side. Take the San Remo exit and drive down to the town centre via the Strada Provinciale. The entire journey is on motorway, fast and comfortable. The alternative via the coastal road (Lower Corniche then Via Aurelia) is picturesque but adds an hour, passing through Monaco, Roquebrune, Menton, Ventimiglia and Bordighera. This option is recommended for enjoying coastal panoramas if time allows.

Specific tips for the Nice → San Remo route

San Remo is perfect for a day trip from Nice. The Tuesday and Saturday market on Piazza Eroi Sanremesi is a feast for the eyes and palate: focaccia, fresh pesto, Ligurian cheeses and hillside olive oil. The casino is open afternoons and evenings — bring your ID. The old town La Pigna is explored on foot (sturdy shoes recommended for cobblestones). For the San Remo Festival (February), book your taxi well in advance. Prices in Italy are generally slightly lower than France: take advantage by lunching in a La Pigna trattoria. Note: Italy uses euros (no currency change needed from France).
