Sainte-Maxime is a charming seaside resort on the north shore of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, facing its famous neighbour across the bay. Less showy than Saint-Tropez but equally appealing, Sainte-Maxime offers sandy beaches lined with umbrella pines, a lively marina and a pleasant year-round waterfront promenade. The town attracts families and couples seeking an authentic Côte d'Azur experience, away from the jet-set excess. Its daily covered market is a true temple of Provençal gastronomy, with olives, goat cheeses and Côtes de Provence wines. The Maures massif, covered in cork oak and chestnut forests, provides a magnificent natural setting. The journey from Nice crosses the Var department and offers beautiful views of the Provençal hinterland before descending to the coast and the sparkling blue of the gulf.
Route
Route Nice → Sainte-Maxime
From Nice, take the A8 motorway (La Provençale) towards Aix-en-Provence. After Fréjus, take exit 37 Le Muy. Then follow the D25 heading south through the Maures massif, passing through Plan-de-la-Tour. This winding but picturesque departmental road crosses cork oak hills before reaching Sainte-Maxime from the north. A sometimes faster alternative: exit at Fréjus (exit 38) and follow the coast via the D559 through Saint-Raphaël, but this road is very congested in summer. Our drivers choose the optimal route based on real-time traffic conditions.

Specific tips for the Nice → Sainte-Maxime route
In July-August, traffic on the Var coast is extremely heavy, especially on Saturdays (rental changeover day). Plan an early morning or early afternoon departure. The covered market in Sainte-Maxime, open daily, is a must for local produce. The best beaches are between Sainte-Maxime and La Nartelle, easily reachable by taxi. To visit Saint-Tropez from Sainte-Maxime, the ferry crosses the gulf in 15 minutes and avoids the terrible traffic on the peninsula. Book your return taxi in advance during high season as demand is very high. In the evening, the port offers a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere with fish restaurants.
