Saint-Martin-Vésubie is an exceptional mountain town nestled at 960 metres altitude at the confluence of the Boréon and Madone de Fenestre rivers, in the heart of the Vésubie valley. Nicknamed the 'Swiss Riviera' for its lush alpine landscapes and crystal-clear torrents, this small town is the primary gateway to the Mercantour National Park, one of France's natural jewels with its 685 km² of wilderness sheltering chamois, ibex, marmots and the famous wolves that naturally returned to the Alps from Italy. It is the wolf that has brought recent fame to Saint-Martin thanks to the Alpha animal park, located in the Boréon forest at 1,500 metres altitude, where three wolf packs live in semi-freedom in a spectacular forest setting. The village itself is charming, with its central street lined with 16th-century arcaded houses, its central canal (the 'valat') carrying mountain water, and its Church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption housing an altarpiece attributed to Louis Bréa. The Boréon valley, accessible from the village, offers an enchanting lake surrounded by larches and hiking trails to the Mercantour's high-altitude lakes. In summer, Saint-Martin is a paradise for hikers; in winter, the nearby La Colmiane resort offers family skiing. The journey from Nice ascends the spectacular Vésubie valley, one of the wildest in the Alpes-Maritimes.

Route

Route Nice → Saint-Martin-Vésubie

From Nice, take the M6202 along the Var valley northward. After Plan-du-Var (about 25 km), turn right onto the M2565 which enters the Vésubie valley. The road follows the river through Lantosque, a picturesque village clinging to the mountainside, then crosses the spectacular Vésubie Gorges before opening onto the Saint-Martin basin. The landscape changes dramatically along the way: from the Mediterranean olive trees of Plan-du-Var, to the chestnut trees of Lantosque, then to the larches and firs of Saint-Martin. The road is well maintained but winding, especially in the gorge section. For the Alpha park, continue 8 km beyond the village on the Boréon road. Our drivers are accustomed to this mountain road and drive with care and experience.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Nice → Saint-Martin-Vésubie route

The Alpha Wolf Park is the star attraction: the 'scénovisions' (night-time shows in summer where wolves howl in the forest) are an unforgettable experience — book absolutely. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the park visit. For hikers, the Boréon valley offers trails for all levels: the Lac du Boréon walk (easy, 1 hour) is perfect for families, while the Fenestre Lakes or Pas des Ladres are more challenging day hikes. In summer, the Boréon water is refreshingly cool for swimming. The village of Saint-Martin deserves at least a 1-hour stroll to admire the arcaded houses and taste local specialities: Swiss chard pie, ravioli with daube sauce, ganses pastries. In winter, La Colmiane resort (15 km before Saint-Martin) offers affordable family skiing. Note: after Storm Alex (2020), some road sections were rebuilt — the road is passable but works may cause delays.
