Puget-Théniers is a characterful town nestled at the confluence of the Var and Roudoule rivers, at the crossroads of valleys leading to the Mercantour, the Cians Gorges and the Route Napoléon. This medieval village with its rich past retains a picturesque old town with tall stone houses, vaulted passages and shaded squares. The parish church houses a remarkable altarpiece of the Virgin of the Rosary attributed to Antoine Mirailhet (16th century), as well as an altarpiece of Our Lady of Good Help. Puget-Théniers is an important station on the Train des Pignes, the metre-gauge railway linking Nice to Digne-les-Bains in 3h15, offering one of France's finest train journeys through the wild landscapes of the Southern Alps. The village is also the starting point for the Roudoule Gorges road, a spectacular canyon carved into red schist, accessible on foot or by car. Bernar Venet's monumental sculpture, 'The Major Arc', installed in front of the station, adds a surprising touch of contemporary art to this rural setting. The journey from Nice ascends the Var valley on the M6202, one of the Alpes-Maritimes' most beautiful departmental roads, following the river through narrow gorges and past perched villages before opening onto the Puget basin.
Route
Route Nice → Puget-Théniers
From Nice, take the M6202 northward along the Var valley. The road follows the river on its left bank, passing through Plan-du-Var, the Var gorges and Villars-sur-Var. After Touët-sur-Var, a spectacular village clinging to the cliff, the valley opens slightly and you reach Puget-Théniers after about 62 km. The road is entirely departmental, toll-free, well maintained but winding in the gorge section. The scenery is magnificent throughout: terraced olive groves, limestone cliffs, perched villages and the Var winding through the valley floor. Our drivers know this road perfectly as they use it regularly for transfers to ski resorts and Digne-les-Bains.

Specific tips for the Nice → Puget-Théniers route
Puget-Théniers is an excellent starting point for the Cians Gorges (towards Valberg, 30 km) or the Roudoule valley. For an original experience, take the taxi to Puget-Théniers and return to Nice by Train des Pignes (or vice versa) — the train from Puget to Nice takes about 1h30 and offers panoramas inaccessible by road. The village is small but charming: allow 1-2 hours to explore the old town, the church and its altarpieces, and have a coffee in the square. Market day is Sunday morning. The Roudoule Gorges (accessed from the village via the D16) are a well-kept secret: an easy 2-hour return hike through a red schist canyon. For lunch, village inns serve traditional Niçois cuisine at gentle prices: daube, ravioli and Swiss chard pie.
