Mougins is a medieval perched village in the Cannes hinterland that has mastered the art of combining art, gastronomy and joie de vivre like nowhere else in Provence. It was here that Pablo Picasso chose to spend the last twelve years of his life (1961-1973), at the Mas Notre-Dame-de-Vie, drawn by the light and tranquillity of the place. The village became a gastronomy capital thanks to Roger Vergé, whose Moulin de Mougins (three Michelin stars) revolutionised Provençal cuisine in the 1970s. Today, the International Gastronomy Festival (Les Étoiles de Mougins) continues this tradition every autumn. The Museum of Photography, housed in a 15th-century building, displays portraits of Picasso by Doisneau, Quinn and Villers. The old village with its circular lanes, art galleries, Renaissance fountains and gourmet restaurants makes for a refined excursion from Nice.
Route
Route Nice → Mougins
From Nice, take the A8 motorway towards Cannes / Aix-en-Provence. After 28 km, take exit 42 'Mougins'. Follow the D35 uphill for 2 km to reach the perched old village. The village is pedestrianised: the driver drops you at the Porte Sarrazine car park, at the entrance to the medieval town. The journey crosses the wooded hills above Sophia Antipolis, with views over the Brague valley. For a more scenic route, you can take the D6085 via the Grasse road, but it adds 15 minutes.

Specific tips for the Nice → Mougins route
Mougins is a gourmet village: book your restaurant well in advance, especially on weekends. The Photography Museum (free) is small but fascinating: the Picasso portraits are worth the visit. The old village can be explored on foot in 45 minutes. The Les Étoiles de Mougins festival (September) transforms the village into a giant open-air restaurant with chefs from around the world. The Mas Notre-Dame-de-Vie, Picasso's last home, is private but visible from the road. Mougins is ideally located to combine with Grasse (perfumeries, 15 min) or Cannes (15 min). In summer, prefer an evening visit for a sunset dinner.
