Menton, known as the 'Pearl of France', is the last French town before the Italian border. Nestled between sea and mountains, this town enjoys an exceptional microclimate and is famous for its citrus gardens, the Lemon Festival and baroque heritage. The journey from Nice offers spectacular Mediterranean panoramas, whether you take the Lower Corniche along the water, the Middle Corniche clinging to the cliffs, or the A8 motorway above. Menton attracts visitors with its covered Provençal market, the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel and the Jean Cocteau Museum. Its mild year-round climate has made it a popular winter destination since the 19th century.

Route

Route Nice → Menton

From Nice, two main routes are available. The A8 motorway is the fastest: take exit 59 Menton and drive down to the town centre in 5 minutes. The motorway bypasses Monaco through a tunnel and crosses Cap Martin at altitude. The scenic alternative follows the Middle Corniche (D6007) winding through Villefranche-sur-Mer, offering breathtaking views of the harbour, then passing through Èze Village perched on its rocky outcrop. You'll then pass Cap-d'Ail and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin before arriving in Menton along the seafront. The Lower Corniche (M6098) hugs the coastline most closely but traffic is often heavy, especially in summer.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Nice → Menton route

In summer, plan to depart before 9am or after 7pm to avoid congestion on the Promenade des Anglais and through Monaco. Parking in Menton's town centre is difficult: a taxi drops you right at your destination. Allow extra time on market days (Tuesday to Sunday mornings) as traffic around the Halles is heavy. If visiting for the Lemon Festival (February-March), book your taxi well in advance as demand surges. The return trip can take a different route for variety: outbound via A8, return via the Corniche.
