The Verdon Gorges are Europe's largest canyon: 25 km of vertiginous cliffs reaching 700 m deep, carved by the Verdon river with its surreally turquoise waters. This exceptional natural site attracts thousands of visitors each year for kayaking, hiking, climbing and swimming. Lake Sainte-Croix, an artificial reservoir with emerald waters, is the area's jewel: pedal boats and canoes can be hired at the foot of the gorges. The village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, clinging between two cliffs linked by a chain bearing a star, is listed as one of France's 'Most Beautiful Villages'. The Route des Crêtes (D71) offers breathtaking views over the canyon.

Route

Route Nice → Gorges du Verdon

From Nice, take the A8 towards Aix. Exit at Le Muy (exit 36) then take the D557 towards Draguignan–Aups. After Aups, the D957 climbs towards the gorges. For Lake Sainte-Croix, descend towards Bauduen or Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon. For Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, continue on the D957 then D952. The Route des Crêtes (D71) starts from the D952 at Point Sublime. The journey offers a spectacular landscape progression: coastline, pine forests, vineyards, garrigue then the white cliffs of the canyon.

The Route des Crêtes (D71) is a 23 km one-way loop with 14 viewpoints: allow at least 1h30. It's closed from November to March. Lake Sainte-Croix is swimmable from June to September (water 20-22°C). Canoe hire at Pont du Galetas is besieged in summer: arrive before 10am. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is beautiful but very touristy in summer: visit early morning. The road is winding after Aups: the professional driver knows every bend. Bring water and sunscreen.
