The Verdon Gorges are Europe's largest canyon: 25 km of vertiginous cliffs reaching 700 m deep, carved by the Verdon river with its surreally turquoise waters. This exceptional natural site attracts thousands of visitors each year for kayaking, hiking, climbing and swimming. Lake Sainte-Croix, an artificial reservoir with emerald waters, is the area's jewel: pedal boats and canoes can be hired at the foot of the gorges. The village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, clinging between two cliffs linked by a chain bearing a star, is listed as one of France's 'Most Beautiful Villages'. The Route des Crêtes (D71) offers breathtaking views over the canyon.
