Entrevaux is one of the hidden gems of the Nice hinterland, a fortified town listed among France's Most Beautiful Detours, which seems to spring straight from the Middle Ages. Set on the banks of the Var, at the foot of a rocky spur crowned by an impregnable citadel fortified by Vauban in 1693, the small town has preserved its ramparts, watchtowers and still-functioning drawbridge — one of the few remaining in France — in their entirety. You enter the town through a fortified gate spanning the Var on a two-arched bridge, then discover a maze of narrow lanes, shaded squares and tall houses with painted shutters. The climb to the citadel via the zigzag path (20 minutes' walk, 135 metres of elevation gain) offers an extraordinary view of the confluence of the Var and Chalvagne rivers, the surrounding mountains and the old-town rooftops below. The former Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, dating from the 17th century, houses a remarkable baroque organ and gilded altarpieces. Entrevaux is a stop on the Train des Pignes, allowing you to combine train and taxi for a memorable day trip. The Motorcycle Museum, housed in the citadel's casemates, surprises with its collection of vintage motorcycles. The journey from Nice ascends the Var valley, one of the most magnificent landscapes in the Alpes-Maritimes.
Route
Route Nice → Entrevaux
From Nice, take the M6202 which follows the Var valley north-westward. The road runs alongside the river through the spectacular Var gorges, passing Plan-du-Var, Villars-sur-Var and Touët-sur-Var (a village clinging to the cliff that deserves a look). After Puget-Théniers, continue on the N202 for a further 13 km to Entrevaux. The road is entirely departmental then national, toll-free, well maintained but winding in the gorge sections. The setting is sumptuous throughout: olive trees, limestone cliffs, perched villages and the Var winding through its bed of white pebbles. On arriving at Entrevaux, the taxi drops you at the car park just before the drawbridge, steps from the entrance to the walled town.

Specific tips for the Nice → Entrevaux route
Wear good walking shoes for the climb to the citadel: the path is cobbled and fairly steep in places, but the view from the top is extraordinary. The climb takes 20 minutes and the citadel visit about 45 minutes. Citadel entry is charged (about €5). For a perfect day, combine the outbound taxi with a Train des Pignes return: the train from Entrevaux to Nice takes about 1h45 and crosses scenery inaccessible by road. The village can be explored in 2-3 hours including the citadel. Restaurants within the walled town are few but charming: try traditional Provençal cooking at one of the two inns on the main street. Market day is Friday morning inside the town. In summer, baroque music concerts are sometimes held in the cathedral, taking advantage of the exceptional acoustics of the historic organ. Entrevaux can be combined with Puget-Théniers (13 km) for a day discovering the Var valley.
