Draguignan, sub-prefecture of the Var, is a characterful town nestled at the foot of the Haut-Var hills. Former prefecture of the department until 1974, it retains a rich heritage with its medieval Clock Tower, the Pierre de la Fée dolmen (one of the largest in Provence) and the artillery school that shaped its identity. The town is surrounded by AOC Côtes-de-Provence vineyards and is the ideal starting point for exploring the Verdon Gorges, Lake Sainte-Croix and the perched villages of the Haut-Var such as Aups, Tourtour ('the village in the sky') and Bargème.

Route

Route Nice → Draguignan

From Nice, take the A8 towards Aix-en-Provence. After 80 km, exit at Le Muy toll (exit 36). Then take the D555 towards Draguignan for 15 km through the Argens plain. This road passes through Les Arcs-sur-Argens, a renowned wine village, before arriving in Draguignan from the south. The route is straightforward and well signposted. The landscape gradually evolves: after the coastal hills of the Estérel, you enter green Provence, with its oaks, olive trees and vineyards as far as the eye can see.

Specific tips for the Nice → Draguignan route

The journey is smooth outside summer weekends. The Le Muy exit can be congested on Saturday mornings in July-August. If visiting the Verdon Gorges from Draguignan, plan an early start: the D957 road towards Aups then Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is winding. Our driver can recommend the best wine estates along the route. Draguignan's market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings) is one of the largest in the Var: ask to be dropped at Place du Marché.
