Cap-d'Ail is a small, under-the-radar seaside resort nestled between cliffs and sea, right at the gateway to Monaco. Unlike its princely neighbour, Cap-d'Ail has preserved an authentic, relaxed atmosphere that appeals to Riviera connoisseurs. Mala Beach, tucked at the foot of tall limestone cliffs, is regularly ranked among the finest beaches on the French Riviera. Its crystal-clear waters and wild setting contrast sharply with the manicured beaches along the coast. The Cap-d'Ail coastal path, stretching 3.7 kilometres, winds between rocks and sea from Marquet beach to Pointe des Douaniers, offering spectacular views of Monaco and the Rock. The town was long a favoured retreat: Sacha Guitry, Greta Garbo and Winston Churchill all stayed here. The beautiful Belle Époque villas dotting the hillsides bear witness to this glamorous past. Cap-d'Ail is also a convenient starting point for exploring Monaco on foot, with the border just a few minutes' walk away.
Route
Route Nice → Cap-d'Ail
From Nice, two main routes are available. The Lower Corniche (M6098) follows the coastline through Villefranche-sur-Mer and Beaulieu-sur-Mer before reaching Cap-d'Ail along the seafront. This coastal route offers continuous Mediterranean views but can be slowed by traffic in summer. The A8 motorway is faster: head towards Italy and take exit 57 La Turbie, then descend to Cap-d'Ail via the D6007 and D37. This route from the heights offers a striking panorama of Monaco before dropping to the coast. The Middle Corniche (D6007) provides a pleasant compromise, passing through Èze Village before descending to Cap-d'Ail. The driver drops you at your hotel, at Mala Beach (accessed by steps from Avenue Raymond Gramaglia) or at the coastal path.
Main route: Basse Corniche (M6098) ou A8 — ~1,50 € (section Nice–Cap-d'Ail via A8)

Specific tips for the Nice → Cap-d'Ail route
Mala Beach is reached by steps from the road: about 100 steps down (and back up!). Bring suitable footwear and water. In summer, the beach gets very busy: arrive before 9:30am to find a spot. Two beach restaurants (Eden Plage and Mala Beach) serve excellent grilled fish with your feet in the sand. The coastal path is free and open year-round. To reach Monaco on foot from Cap-d'Ail, use the pedestrian passage under the Fairmont (about 10 minutes' walk). Cap-d'Ail is significantly cheaper than Monaco for accommodation: it's an excellent base for visiting the Principality. The driver can drop you in the morning and collect you in the evening after a day between the beach and Monaco.
