Biot is a medieval village perched on a hillside between Nice and Antibes, world-famous for its glass art. Since the 1950s, when the Verrerie de Biot revived the tradition of bubble-blown glass, the village has become a premier centre for art craftsmanship on the Côte d'Azur. The glassblowing workshops, open to visitors, offer a fascinating spectacle as artisans blow, turn and shape molten glass before your eyes. The Fernand Léger National Museum, set at the foot of the village in a building decorated with a monumental mosaic, houses the world's largest collection of works by this master of cubism and modern art. The historic village itself deserves thorough exploration: its 16th-century ramparts, fortified gateway, Place aux Arcades with its pointed arches and restored medieval houses form a remarkable architectural ensemble. The Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine contains an altarpiece of the Rosary attributed to Louis Bréa (15th century), and the Chapel of Saint-Julien houses Romanesque frescoes. At the foot of the village, Marineland and its adjacent parks (Aquasplash, Adventure Golf) attract families. The journey from Nice via the A8 motorway takes just 25 minutes and offers views over the hinterland hills.

Route

Route Nice → Biot

From Nice, take the A8 motorway towards Aix-en-Provence / Cannes. Exit at junction 44 'Biot' and follow the D4 towards the medieval village. The road climbs gently through pines and olive trees to the perched village. For the Fernand Léger Museum, follow signs for 'Musée Léger' from the roundabout at the foot of the village — the museum has a large free car park. For the glassworks, continue towards the village centre and park at the upper car park (or the taxi drops you directly). The alternative via the D6007 coast road passes through Cagnes-sur-Mer then climbs to Biot, a longer route (35 min) but toll-free. Our drivers know both options and choose according to traffic.

Specific tips for the Nice → Biot route

Start your visit at the Verrerie de Biot (open daily except Sundays in winter) to watch the glassblowers in action — entry is free and the demonstrations are spectacular. The Fernand Léger Museum deserves at least 1h30: the collection is exceptional and the building itself, with its great facade mosaic, is a work of art. In the village, don't miss the Place aux Arcades, the historic heart, and the art galleries scattered through the lanes. Les Terraillers restaurant, Michelin-starred, is a renowned gastronomic address set in a 16th-century pottery workshop. For families, Marineland at the foot of the village offers dolphin and orca shows. The Biot market is held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings on the main square.
