Barcelonnette is one of the most singular towns in the French Alps. Nestled at 1,135 metres altitude in the Ubaye Valley, it surprises visitors with its sumptuous Mexican-style villas, testimony to a remarkable emigration in the 19th century. Between 1850 and 1950, hundreds of Barcelonnettes left to seek their fortune in Mexico's textile trade, founding companies like the Palacio de Hierro and Puerto de Liverpool, today among the country's largest retailers. Returning wealthy, they built extravagant villas in their native valley, blending Alpine architecture with Mexican neo-classical accents. The Valley Museum traces this fascinating saga. But Barcelonnette also means skiing: the resorts of Pra-Loup and Le Sauze together offer over 180 km of runs in an unspoilt natural setting. In summer, the valley is a hiking paradise with access to the Mercantour and crystal-clear altitude lakes. The journey from Nice follows spectacular mountain roads, crossing the Col de la Cayolle at 2,326 metres, one of the highest road passes in the Southern Alps, offering breathtaking panoramas of snowy peaks and flowering alpine pastures.
Route
Route Nice → Barcelonnette
From Nice, take the M6202 along the Var valley northward. After Guillaumes, turn onto the D902 which climbs through the Bachelard gorges to the Col de la Cayolle (2,326 m). This pass is open from June to October only. The northern descent follows the Bachelard valley then reaches Barcelonnette via the D900. In winter (November to May), the Col de la Cayolle is closed: the alternative route goes via Digne-les-Bains on the N202 then the D900 over the Col de la Colle Saint-Michel, adding 60 km and 45 minutes to the journey. Our drivers know both routes perfectly and choose the most suitable depending on the season and weather conditions. The road is demanding but magnificent, with spectacular gorge passages and grandiose Alpine panoramas at the pass.

Check the Col de la Cayolle opening before departure (generally June to October). In winter, the Digne route is the only option and adds time. Barcelonnette is worth the trip for its unique heritage: don't miss the guided tour of Mexican villas organised by the tourist office. The Wednesday and Saturday market is lively and authentic. For skiing at Pra-Loup or Le Sauze, our vehicles are mountain-equipped in winter. In summer, Serre-Ponçon lake is accessible in 30 minutes: easily combined with a visit to Barcelonnette. Valley restaurants serve generous mountain cuisine: ravioles, tourtons (potato fritters) and wild blueberry jams.
