This pass is open from June to October only. The northern descent follows the Bachelard valley then reaches Barcelonnette via the D900. In winter (November to May), the Col de la Cayolle is closed: the alternative route goes via Digne-les-Bains on the N202 then the D900 over the Col de la Colle Saint-Michel, adding 60 km and 45 minutes to the journey.
