Auron is a charming ski resort nestled at 1,600 metres altitude in the upper Tinée valley, in the heart of the Mercantour National Park. Unlike standardised large Alpine resorts, Auron has preserved the soul of an authentic mountain village with its wooden chalets, its Chapel of Saint-Érige adorned with medieval frescoes and its friendly atmosphere. The ski area extends from 1,600 to 2,450 metres with 135 kilometres of runs suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers. The resort is linked to Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée to form a vast shared domain. Auron is particularly popular with Nice-based families for its exceptional sunshine — over 300 days of sun per year, a record for a ski resort — and for its gentler atmosphere compared to the ski factories of the large Alps. In summer, Auron becomes a hiking and mountain biking paradise with marked trails through the Mercantour's alpine pastures, populated by marmots, chamois and sometimes wolves. The journey from Nice ascends one of the most spectacular valleys in the Southern Alps, the Tinée valley, with its dizzying gorges, medieval bridges and villages clinging to cliffsides.

Route

Route Nice → Auron

From Nice, take the M6202 (Digne road) northward along the Var valley. After about 25 km, at the Plan-du-Var junction, turn right onto the D2205 which climbs the Tinée valley. The road first passes through the spectacular lower Tinée gorges, then opens onto mid-mountain landscapes via La Tour-sur-Tinée, Clans and Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée. Continue on the D2205 past Isola village towards Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. Just before Saint-Étienne, take the D39 which climbs in hairpin bends to Auron (about 6 km of ascent). The entire route follows departmental roads with no tolls. In winter, the road is regularly cleared but conditions can be challenging during heavy snowfall, particularly in the Tinée gorges. Our drivers know this road perfectly and are equipped for winter mountain driving.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Nice → Auron route

The journey is longer than to Isola 2000 (30 extra minutes) but Auron offers a larger ski area and a more authentic village feel. In winter, bring very warm clothing: Auron can drop to -15 °C in extreme cold. Check road conditions before departure, especially between December and March. The Chapel of Saint-Érige, decorated with 15th-century frescoes, is worth a visit even if you come for skiing. Auron's restaurants serve generous mountain cuisine: raclette, tartiflette and game dishes. In summer, the GR5 trail passes through Auron: the taxi can drop you at the start of a stage and collect you at the end of another. The village's summer artisan market is a friendly moment not to be missed. For families, the resort offers summer activities such as toboggan runs and adventure parks.
