Annot is an extraordinary village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, situated at 700 metres altitude in a unique natural setting where immense sandstone boulders sculpted by erosion dot the landscape, creating a fascinating rocky chaos known as the 'Grès d'Annot' (Annot Sandstones). These spectacular geological formations, some tens of metres high, are set amid the oak and pine forest surrounding the village, offering an exceptional playground for rock climbing (over 900 documented routes) and hiking. Annot's old town is a medieval delight: its winding lanes, arcaded houses, carved lintels dating from the 15th to 18th centuries and shaded squares form a remarkably well-preserved architectural ensemble. The Romanesque gateway, remnants of the ramparts and the Romanesque parish church complete the picture. Annot is a major station on the Train des Pignes, the Nice–Digne metre-gauge railway, and some historic steam trains stop here in summer, adding a touch of railway nostalgia. The Tuesday market is one of Provence's finest mountain markets, with local producers offering goat's cheeses, mountain honey, charcuterie and seasonal vegetables. The journey from Nice ascends the Var valley before turning into the Vaïre valley, an increasingly Alpine and wild landscape.
Route
Route Nice → Annot
From Nice, take the N202 which ascends the Var valley north-westward. After the Var gorges, Puget-Théniers and Entrevaux, the road turns north towards Annot through the Vaïre valley. The climb to Annot is gradual, crossing mid-mountain landscapes of oak and pine forests. The village appears in a basin surrounded by mountains, with the first sandstone boulders visible from the road. The entire journey is toll-free, on well-maintained but winding national and departmental roads. The main car park is at the foot of the village, a 2-minute walk from the main square and station. Our drivers know this road perfectly from regular transfers to hinterland resorts.

Specific tips for the Nice → Annot route
The Annot Sandstones are the village's main attraction. The signed discovery trail (about 2 hours, easy loop) allows you to explore the most impressive formations: the King's Chamber, the Block of a Thousand Faces, the Devil's Slab. For climbers, Annot is a European-class climbing spot with over 900 routes from 3a to 8c. The Tuesday morning market is an institution: arrive before 10am for the best choice of cheeses and local products. A day combining an outbound taxi with a Train des Pignes return is the perfect experience: the train descends to Nice in about 2 hours through scenery inaccessible by road. In summer, steam trains (some Sundays) make the journey an attraction in itself. The Auberge de la Gare offers hearty mountain cuisine at reasonable prices. Annot is also the starting point for hikes to Lac d'Allos (Europe's largest natural high-altitude lake), accessible as a day trip.
