Ghent (Gent in Dutch) is one of Europe's finest medieval cities, often considered Belgium's best-kept secret. Its historic centre, at the confluence of the Scheldt and Lys rivers, offers a stunning architectural spectacle: the Castle of the Counts of Flanders (Gravensteen), Saint Bavo's Cathedral housing Van Eyck's famous Mystic Lamb, the UNESCO-listed belfry and the three-tower alignment visible from Saint Michael's Bridge. Ghent is also a vibrant student city (65,000 students), with an inventive gastronomic scene and lively nightlife. The Graslei and Korenlei, quays lined with guild houses, form the city's most iconic panorama.
Route
Route Lille → Gand (Belgique)
From Lille, take the A22 towards Gent/Brussels. After the French toll at Neuville-en-Ferrain, you cross the Belgian border (no Schengen checks) and join the E17 (free Belgian motorway). Follow signs for 'Gent Centrum'. The city centre exit drops you near the Gravensteen. The journey is fast and direct. Note: GPS may route you via Kortrijk (Courtrai), a longer route. Stay on the E17 for the most direct journey. In Ghent, the low emission zone (LEZ) is in force: our vehicles are compliant.
Main route: A22 (France) puis E17/A14 (Belgique) — ~3 € (péage A22 français, autoroute belge gratuite)

Ghent is more authentic and less touristy than Bruges, with lower prices. The Ghent Festivities (Gentse Feesten, 10 days in July) are Europe's largest urban festival: book your taxi well in advance. The Graslei lit up at night is magical: plan a late return. Visit STAM (city museum) to understand Ghent's fascinating history.
