Bruges is one of Europe's most beautiful cities, often called the Venice of the North for its romantic canals, stone bridges and preserved medieval façades. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an intact architectural gem from the Middle Ages: the Belfry on the Market Square (83 metres, 366 steps), the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the Church of Our Lady housing Michelangelo's Madonna, the Beguinage (Begijnhof) with its daffodil garden, and canals lined with stepped-gable houses. Bruges is also the capital of Belgian chocolate, with over 50 artisan chocolatiers in the centre, and of Flemish lace. Belgian beer is ubiquitous, notably the Brugse Zot brewed at De Halve Maan, the only active brewery in the historic centre. From Lille, Bruges is a perfect day trip by taxi: the journey is short, the border crossing invisible (Schengen area), and the return at day's end is worry-free with no connections or last trains. A taxi is ideal because trains from Lille to Bruges require a change at Kortrijk, and parking in central Bruges is very expensive and limited.

Your driver leaves Lille via the A22 towards Belgium. The Franco-Belgian border crossing is imperceptible — just a sign marking entry into Belgium. You first cross Mouscron (a French-speaking Belgian town), then join the E17 motorway towards Kortrijk. At Kortrijk, a historic city of the Battle of the Golden Spurs (1302), you branch onto the E40 towards Ostend and Bruges. The E40 crosses West Flanders, a fertile agricultural plain with flax fields, Flemish farms and windmills. Arrival in Bruges is via the Brugge Centrum exit, and your driver drops you as close to the historic centre as possible — ideally at Bruges station or the 't Zand car park, from where the pedestrian centre is a 5-minute walk. Tolls are minimal (about €3 on the French side); Belgian motorways are toll-free. The journey takes 1h15 normally and can reach 1h40 on tourist weekends.
