Abbeville is a city of art and history in the Somme department, known as the gateway to the Baie de Somme, one of the most beautiful natural sites in France and a designated Grand Site de France. The city boasts remarkable architectural heritage, dominated by the Collegiate Church of Saint-Vulfran, a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic whose richly sculpted facade rivals the finest Picard cathedrals. Built between 1488 and 1539, it impresses with the delicacy of its ornaments and the height of its towers. Abbeville is also famous for the Chateau de Bagatelle, an elegant 18th-century residence surrounded by French and English gardens classified as a Jardin Remarquable. This chateau, built in 1752 by Abraham Van Robais, a wealthy Dutch manufacturer of the Rames d'Abbeville textile works, is one of the finest examples of 18th-century leisure architecture in Picardy. The town also retains its belfry (UNESCO), the remains of the comtal castle and the Boucher-de-Perthes Museum, named after the father of prehistory who made his major discoveries in the Somme valley. The proximity of the Baie de Somme — Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy and the Marquenterre Park are only 15-20 km away — makes Abbeville an ideal base camp for exploring this exceptional territory of nature and light.
