Tarbes, capital of the Hautes-Pyrénées department, is a town of character nestled at the foot of the central Pyrenees, 310 km from Bordeaux. Founded in Gallo-Roman times under the name Turba, the town has preserved a rich military and equestrian heritage through the centuries. The National Stud Farm of Tarbes, created by Napoleon I in 1806, is the birthplace of the Anglo-Arab Tarbais horse, an excellence breed recognised worldwide for show jumping and eventing. These stud farms, housed in magnificent 19th-century buildings surrounded by landscaped gardens classified as Remarkable Gardens, can be visited year-round. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Sède, a Romanesque and Gothic edifice from the 12th-14th centuries, contains exceptional carved choir stalls and a historic organ. The Jardin Massey, named after botanist Placide Massey (director of the Orangerie at Versailles), is an 11-hectare park housing a medieval cloister from the monastery of Saint-Sever-de-Rustan and a unique Hussars Museum, the only one in Europe, tracing the history of this light cavalry that shaped French military history. Above all, Tarbes is the prime gateway to the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2,877 m), accessible by cable car from La Mongie (40 min from Tarbes), offering a 360° panorama of the Pyrenean chain and some of the purest starry skies in France.
