Sarlat-la-Canéda is the capital of Périgord Noir and one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns. Its historic centre, with cobbled lanes, golden stone mansions and stone slab roofs, has served as a film set for many movies (Les Misérables, Besson's Joan of Arc, Jacquou le Croquant). The Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral, the 12th-century Lantern of the Dead and La Boétie's birthplace bear witness to eight centuries of architecture. Sarlat is also the gastronomic capital of southwest France: foie gras, black truffles, walnuts, ceps and Bergerac wine are everywhere at the Saturday market. The Dordogne valley and its castles (Beynac, Castelnaud, La Roque-Gageac) are just kilometres away.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Sarlat-la-Canéda

From Bordeaux, take the A89 towards Périgueux/Clermont-Ferrand. After Périgueux, continue on the D710 then D47 towards Sarlat through the forests of Périgord Noir. The landscape changes dramatically: Bordeaux vineyards give way to oak forests, walnut trees and limestone cliffs of the Dordogne. The approach to Sarlat through the valley offers a magical first glimpse of the golden city. Alternative (longer but gorgeous): join the Dordogne valley via Bergerac and follow the river.

Sarlat market (Saturday morning) is one of France's finest: arrive before 9am. In winter (November-March), the truffle market (Saturday morning, Place de la Liberté) is an event. The historic centre tour takes 2-3 hours on foot. Combine with Beynac (10 km) and La Roque-Gageac (12 km) for a full day.
