Libourne is a medieval bastide founded in 1270 by Roger de Leyburn, seneschal of Edward I of England, at the strategic confluence of the Isle and Dordogne rivers. This riverside position made it for centuries the shipping port for Libournais wines heading to Bordeaux, England and Holland. Today, Libourne is the sub-prefecture of the Gironde and the commercial capital of Bordeaux's right bank, a territory concentrating some of the world's most prestigious (and most expensive) wines: Pétrus, Le Pin, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, Château Angélus. Place Abel Surchamp lined with medieval arcades, the Tour du Grand-Port on the Dordogne quays, and the pedestrian streets of the historic centre bear witness to eight centuries of history. The Tuesday and Friday market (Place Abel Surchamp) is renowned for local Libournais produce. Libourne is also an ideal base for visiting Saint-Émilion (8 km), Pomerol (3 km) and Fronsac (5 km). A taxi from Bordeaux is the most practical way to reach the Libournais without parking headaches in narrow wine village streets.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Libourne

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the northern ring road (A630) then the A89 motorway towards Périgueux/Clermont-Ferrand. After crossing Bordeaux's north-eastern suburbs (Carbon-Blanc, Lormont with views of the Pont d'Aquitaine), you briefly follow the Dordogne right-bank marshes. Exit 8 'Libourne' appears after only 25 minutes of motorway. A short expressway leads directly to Libourne town centre, with its Tour du Grand-Port roundabout. The alternative via the D1089 (former RN89) passes through Arveyres and offers a more rural journey through the Entre-deux-Mers vineyard, but adds 10 minutes. The A89 toll is only about €3. The journey is one of the shortest from Bordeaux, making it a very economical transfer.

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Libourne route

Libourne is the ideal starting point for a right-bank wine circuit. Saint-Émilion is 8 km (15 min), Pomerol 3 km (5 min) and Fronsac 5 km (10 min). Our drivers offer bespoke circuits: half-day Pomerol + Saint-Émilion or full day with lunch at a château. Libourne station is a major rail hub (Paris–Bordeaux TGV stops here): we provide station-to-vineyard connections. Libourne market (Tuesday and Friday mornings) offers excellent local produce. The restaurant L'Atelier on the quays serves refined cuisine facing the Dordogne. In September, the Fête de la Tour celebrates the bastide's medieval heritage. Remember that Libourne is also the embarkation point for Dordogne river cruises.

Detailed comparison of transport options

The TER Bordeaux–Libourne costs €7.50 and takes 25 minutes (very frequent, 20+ trains/day). It is an excellent rail connection. The TaxiNeo taxi at €50 — €70 is justified when you want to tour the vineyards from Libourne (no public transport to Pomerol or the châteaux), when travelling with bulky luggage, or when there are 3-4 passengers (€13-18 per person with door-to-door service). The ideal formula: round-trip taxi Bordeaux–Libourne + vineyard circuit with hourly hire.
