Lesparre-Médoc is the sub-prefecture of the Gironde and the administrative capital of the Northern Médoc, the part of the Médoc peninsula beyond Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe. While it lacks the viticultural prestige of its southern neighbours, Lesparre has interesting medieval heritage centred on the Tour de l'Honneur, an imposing 14th-century square keep, remnant of the castle of the Lords of Lesparre who controlled all of Northern Médoc. The town is above all a strategic crossroads for exploring the Northern Médoc: the Pointe de Grave (30 km north), where the Gironde estuary meets the Atlantic Ocean, offers a striking panorama and the ferry to Royan (20-minute crossing). The Cordouan lighthouse, 'Versailles of the sea', a listed monument and UNESCO site, is accessible by boat from Le Verdon-sur-Mer (25 km from Lesparre). The Northern Médoc marshes, wetlands of remarkable ecological richness, shelter exceptional birdlife (herons, storks, snipe). The Médoc appellation (distinct from Haut-Médoc) produces powerful, full-bodied red wines, less well-known but offering excellent value. Lesparre also hosts the Thursday market, one of the Médoc's most important, where wine producers, oyster farmers and local market gardeners come together.

Route

Route Bordeaux → Lesparre-Médoc

From Bordeaux, your driver takes the northern ring road (A630) towards Le Verdon. After Blanquefort, you take the D1215 (former national road) which runs up the entire Médoc peninsula. You cross successively Eysines, Le Taillan-Médoc, Castelnau-de-Médoc, then Listrac-Médoc and Moulis-en-Médoc (renowned wine appellations). Past Saint-Laurent-Médoc, you leave the classified growth zone to enter the Northern Médoc. The road is straight, lined with vines and pine forest. Lesparre appears after about 1h05 of driving. The journey is entirely free (no motorway or tolls). An alternative via the D2 (Route des Châteaux) through Pauillac is possible: 15 minutes longer but much more picturesque. Your driver can offer both options.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Lesparre-Médoc route

The Tour de l'Honneur (14th-century keep) can be visited in summer (guided tour, €4, 30 min). The Lesparre market (Thursday morning, market hall and Place du Marché) is the unmissable event of the Northern Médoc: Arcachon basin oysters, Médoc wines, ceps in season. The Pointe de Grave (30 km) is a recommended detour: the American memorial commemorates the arrival of US troops in 1917, and the panorama over the estuary mouth is spectacular. The Le Verdon–Royan ferry (20-min crossing) allows you to reach Charente-Maritime without the long detour via Bordeaux — our drivers can drop you at the terminal. The Cordouan lighthouse is open April to October (boat excursion from Le Verdon, ~€25, booking required, tide-dependent). For wines, the Médoc appellation châteaux (La Tour de By, Potensac, Loudenne) offer excellent visits with fewer crowds than the Haut-Médoc.
