The Cap Ferret peninsula is one of the best-kept jewels of the French Atlantic coast. A long strip of land separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Arcachon Bay, it stretches over 25 km from Lège in the north to the tip of Cap Ferret in the south, facing the famous Dune du Pilat. This peninsula with its end-of-the-world feel brings together some fifteen villages with distinct identities: L'Herbe, Le Canon, Piraillan, Le Four, Petit Piquey, Grand Piquey, Claouey, each with its colourful cabins, oyster beds and jetty. The commune of Lège-Cap-Ferret (which groups all villages together) offers a fascinating dual character: on the bay side, calm waters shelter oyster parks where farmers produce the famous Cap Ferret oysters, renowned for their iodine flavour and crunchy flesh; on the ocean side, fine sand beaches stretch for kilometres, pounded by Atlantic waves and bordered by maritime pine forest. The Cap Ferret lighthouse (53 m, 258 steps) offers a 360-degree panorama over the bay, the Dune du Pilat, the Bird Island and the ocean. The village of L'Herbe, ranked among France's most picturesque villages, preserves its fishermen's cabins with colourful shutters and its Algerian chapel (built by a colonist returned from Algeria in the 19th century). The Cap Ferret market (daily in summer) and oyster tastings by the bay are unmissable experiences.

Tips & best practices

Specific tips for the Bordeaux → Lège-Cap-Ferret route

In summer (July-August), the peninsula experiences heavy traffic: book your taxi in advance and allow extra travel time. The Cap Ferret lighthouse is open daily in season (€6, exceptional panorama). For oyster tasting, head to the oyster cabins at L'Herbe or Le Canon village: fresh oysters, pâté, white wine, feet in the water. Ocean beaches (Horizon, Truc Vert, Grand Crohot) are magnificent but watch for baïnes (rip currents). Bay-side beaches are calm and perfect for families. The UBA maritime shuttle links Cap Ferret to Arcachon in 25 min: ideal for a combined excursion. Our driver can drop you at the village of your choice (specify when booking). Off-season, the peninsula is magical: quiet, golden light, oysters at their peak and silent forest.
